Pakistan and Cambodia

Acid violence is a form of premeditated violence usually committed against women Acid is thrown to avenge the shame that the woman is accused of bringing, as revenge. Typically it is over marriage refusals, which are often arranged, arguments in the home and sexual advances that are rejected.

The act rarely kills but causes severe physical, psychological and social scarring, often in countries where rehabilitation is either extremely expensive or simply unavailable. A culture of impunity surrounds the crime where the majority of offenders escape trial and conviction. A large number of cases fail to be reported due to fear of retaliation or because of intimidation. Since the acid disfigures, tortures and often blinds an individual, victims often suffer from depression, loss of self-esteem and suicidal tendencies.
